Beaches in Arraial d’Ajuda

Praia de Araçaípe, the beach at Vila Jatobá
Praia de Araçaípe is a 3-minute walk from the house. It is a wide, beautiful beach with beach bars and restaurants along the sand, and it feels calmer than the beaches near the village centre. Just to the north, towards the ferry, is Praia do Apaga Fogo.
Praia do Mucugê
Right below the historic centre, Mucugê is easy to reach and lively, with plenty of beach bars. At low tide, natural pools form. It pairs perfectly with an evening on Rua do Mucugê.
Praia do Parracho
Known for its beach clubs and music. Pick it for a livelier beach day.
Praia de Pitinga
One of the most photographed beaches in the area, with colourful cliffs and wide-open views. Check the tide table first, because the tide changes the experience a lot.
Lagoa Azul and Praia do Taípe
Between Pitinga and Taípe lies Lagoa Azul, reached on foot along the sand. Many visitors cover themselves in clay from the cliffs. Taípe has tall cliffs, long stretches of sand, few facilities and a quiet feel.

The historic centre and Rua do Mucugê

The church of Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda, which gave the village its name, dates back to 1549 and the Jesuits. Next to it is the Mirante das Fitas, a sea-view lookout where people tie a coloured ribbon and make a wish. From there runs Rua do Mucugê, nicknamed “Brazil’s most charming street”, lined with restaurants, shops, galleries and live music. It gets busy from late afternoon.

Arraial d’Ajuda Eco Parque

Opened in 1997 on Praia do Mucugê, the Eco Parque has water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, a zip line, a treetop course and a children’s area. It is about 1.7 km from the house by car. The park only opens on set dates, so check its official calendar before planning a visit.

Trancoso and the Quadrado

Praia do Espelho and Caraíva
Praia do Espelho, between Trancoso and Caraíva, is known for its cliffs and natural pools at low tide. It is about 45 km by car. Caraíva is a car-free village of sandy lanes between river and sea. Cars stay in Nova Caraíva and you cross the river by canoe. It is about 58 km by car, with the last stretch on a dirt road.
